Raised in Midlothian and Williamsburg by a mother who was a schoolteacher, Mrs. G. survived a childhood bout of rheumatic fever through her parents' dedicated daily leg massages and care. During WWII, while her husband, "Daddy Bill," served in the Pacific Navy, she contributed to the war effort working in the shipyards while raising her newborn. Throughout her life—including decades spent on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, in Texas, and in Florida—she built a reputation as an extraordinary cook known for her tollhouse cookies and chocolate silk pie, as well as an avid walker who logged miles along the Yorktown waterfront into her 80s and 90s. Grounded by a long family legacy of longevity, Mrs. G. views home as a place of family connections, holding onto a simple hope for the future: to stay healthy and remain as helpful to others as she can.
